Job Overview:

A highly regarded law firm is seeking a Tax Attorney with an LL.M. in Taxation and at least six years of experience to join its Taxation Practice Group. This position offers the opportunity to advise clients on complex tax matters related to business transactions, estate planning, and tax controversy. The role is ideal for a knowledgeable and strategic attorney who thrives in a collaborative, client-focused legal environment.

Location:

  • Charlotte, NC

Duties:

  • Advise clients on tax planning strategies involving mergers and acquisitions, real estate transactions, and business structuring

  • Provide guidance on nonprofit and charitable tax planning, business succession, and wealth transfer strategies

  • Counsel clients on federal, state, and local tax compliance and minimization

  • Represent clients in tax controversies before the IRS, U.S. Tax Court, and Federal District Courts

  • Draft legal memoranda, opinion letters, and transactional documents related to tax matters

  • Collaborate with other practice groups on multidisciplinary legal projects

  • Monitor developments in tax law and advise clients on legislative and regulatory changes

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience practicing tax law in a law firm setting

  • Demonstrated experience advising on complex tax structures and representing clients in tax disputes

  • Strong understanding of both individual and business tax planning

  • Proven track record of successful client outcomes in advisory and controversy matters

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school

  • Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation (required)

Certifications:

  • Admission to practice law in North Carolina (or eligibility to obtain promptly)

Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws and procedures

  • Excellent research, drafting, and analytical skills

  • Strong oral and written communication abilities

  • Ability to manage complex tax projects independently and collaboratively

  • Skilled at navigating client relationships and providing strategic legal counsel

  • Familiarity with nonprofit tax-exempt organizations and charitable planning (preferred)
