A law firm in San Diego, CA, is seeking a highly skilled Biotechnology Patent Attorney to join its experienced and entrepreneurial team. The ideal candidate will work closely with clients in the biotechnology, bioinformatics, biopharmaceutical, and diagnostics sectors, engaging in various patent-related activities and supporting intellectual property (IP) due diligence.

 

Duties:

  • Engage with early- to mid-stage biotechnology, bioinformatics, biopharmaceutical, and diagnostics clients.
  • Coordinate invention disclosures with clients.
  • Draft and prosecute US life sciences patent applications.
  • Oversee the prosecution of foreign patent applications.
  • Conduct patentability, landscape, freedom-to-operate, validity, and infringement analyses.
  • Support IP due diligence in investments, mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, collaborations, and international licenses.

 

Requirements:

  • 5-8 years of experience as a patent attorney.
  • Registration to practice before the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO).

Education:

  • An undergraduate degree in life sciences such as molecular biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, organic chemistry, or immunology.
  • Advanced degrees (e.g., MS, PhD, JD) are preferred.

 

Certifications:

USPTO registration (required).

 

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of biotechnology and life sciences.
  • Excellent drafting and prosecution skills for patent applications.
  • Ability to conduct thorough patentability and freedom-to-operate analyses.
  • Competence in IP due diligence for various business transactions.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, including experts in AI, medical devices, FDA regulatory matters, and technology transactions.
