Job Title: Mid-Level Patent Prosecution Associate Attorney

Job Overview:
A reputable law firm located in San Francisco, CA, is seeking a skilled mid-level Associate to join its Patent Prosecution & Litigation Practice Group. The ideal candidate will bring 3 to 6 years of experience in patent prosecution, including expertise in drafting applications. A background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a similar field is essential. Knowledge of additional intellectual property areas is a valuable asset.

Duties:

  • Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications.
  • Advise clients on patentability, infringement, and enforcement strategies.
  • Prepare and file responses to office actions and other communications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Handle patent-related litigation support and analysis.
  • Maintain a robust docket of ongoing patent matters and client projects.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external clients to devise comprehensive intellectual property strategies.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3-6 years of experience in patent prosecution.
  • Must be registered with the USPTO.
  • Barred in California (active license required).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical abilities.
  • Detail-oriented and able to manage complex legal and technical matters.

Education:

  • A degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related field is required.

Certifications:

  • Must be registered with the USPTO.
  • California State Bar membership is required.

Skills:

  • Strong technical writing and patent drafting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in patent prosecution procedures and USPTO filings.
  • In-depth knowledge of patent law, particularly related to mechanical or electrical engineering.
  • Experience with patent litigation is a plus.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively to clients and colleagues.
