A law firm is seeking a skilled Patent Agent to join their team in Cary, NC. The ideal candidate will have a solid technical background, particularly in electrical engineering, and experience in patent prosecution. The role involves working on complex technical matters with sophisticated clients, and requires strong drafting skills and the ability to manage tasks efficiently.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) on complex and technical matters.
  • Draft and review Office Action responses that are concise, organized, and well-reasoned.
  • Conduct patent searches and analyze patentability, freedom to operate, and validity.
  • Collaborate with clients and inventors to gather and evaluate technical information.
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of intellectual property laws and regulations.
  • Manage multiple tasks efficiently, meeting deadlines and staying within budget.
  • Provide strategic advice and counsel on patent-related matters.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and the USPTO.
  • Ensure high-quality, timely work product in all aspects of patent prosecution.
  • Comply with all firm policies and practices.
  • Engage in both physical and sedentary activities, such as working at a computer and participating in meetings and calls as needed.
  • Perform additional duties, tasks, or projects as assigned.

Requirements:

  • 1+ years of law firm patent preparation and prosecution experience in technical fields relevant to the client base, preferably with 2-4 years of experience.
  • Electrical Engineering degree (at least B.S.E.E.) from an accredited university, with demonstrated academic achievement.
  • Registration to practice with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) in good standing.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete tasks on time and within budget.
  • Proven ability to draft clear and well-reasoned Office Action responses.
  • Academic background and/or industry work experience in a technology field relevant to the firm's client base.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (B.S.E.E.) or a closely related field from an accredited university.

Certifications:

  • Registration to practice with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) in good standing.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to draft concise, well-organized legal documents.
  • Proficiency in managing multiple tasks and deadlines efficiently.
