A law firm seeks a midlevel associate to join its Intellectual Property practice in Seattle, focusing on life sciences. The ideal candidate will have 1-5 years of patent prosecution experience in biotechnology, along with an advanced degree, preferably a Ph.D., in a relevant life sciences field. This is a great opportunity to work on high-profile patent matters in a collaborative and innovative environment. The successful candidate will also need to be or become a member of the USPTO and will have the chance to expand their expertise in the life sciences sector.

Duties:

  • Lead and manage patent prosecution processes for biotechnology innovations, including drafting and filing patent applications and responding to office actions
  • Conduct patentability, validity, and freedom-to-operate analyses for clients
  • Advise clients on the development and management of patent portfolios, providing strategic guidance to maximize IP protection
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to advise on IP-related issues in the biotechnology field
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients, providing excellent service and strategic counsel on patent matters
  • Stay current on legal developments in patent law and life sciences, particularly in biotechnology
  • Mentor junior attorneys and contribute to the development of the practice

Requirements:

  • 1-5 years of patent prosecution experience in the biotechnology field
  • A Ph.D. in a life sciences-related discipline is highly preferred
  • Active USPTO registration (Patent Bar) is required
  • Willingness to take and pass the Patent Bar if not already registered, within the first 12 months of employment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and client matters in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Education:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in a life sciences-related field

Certifications:

  • USPTO Patent Bar Registration required
  • Admission to the Washington State Bar is preferred but not mandatory

Skills:

  • In-depth understanding of patent prosecution, particularly in the biotechnology space
  • Strong research, writing, and drafting abilities
  • Familiarity with life sciences technologies and innovations
  • Excellent interpersonal and client communication skills
  • Ability to think strategically and provide proactive legal counsel
  • High level of organization and attention to detail
