Patent Agent - Electrical Engineering & Software

Job Overview:

A law firm is seeking a Patent Agent to join its team in the Electrical Engineering & Software area. Location:

• Tysons Corner, VA

Duties:

• Draft and prosecute patent applications related to electrical engineering, software, and wireless technologies
• Provide legal support in patent litigation matters, including patent infringement analysis and defense strategies
• Conduct freedom-to-operate and patentability assessments for clients
• Collaborate with engineering teams and clients to align patents with business objectives
• Maintain and manage clients’ patent portfolios, ensuring their protection and strategic growth
• Advise clients on intellectual property strategies, including risk management and compliance

Requirements:

• 2-6 years of experience in patent prosecution and litigation in the fields of electrical engineering, software, or a similar technical discipline
• Background in computer science, electrical engineering, or related technical fields
• Design engineering experience with a chip company is a plus
• Experience in networking, software, or 3G/4G/5G wireless technologies preferred
• Admission to the USPTO is required for both Associate and Patent Agent candidates
• Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills
• Ability to work independently and collaborate with a team of professionals

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a similar technical field

Certifications:

• Membership in the USPTO is required

Skills:

• Expertise in patent prosecution and litigation processes
• In-depth knowledge of electrical engineering, software, and wireless technologies
• Strong ability to draft and manage patent applications and portfolios
• Conduct legal analyses, including freedom-to-operate and patentability assessments
• Excellent research, writing, and verbal communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
