The role involves handling patent applications, providing legal advice on intellectual property issues, and supporting clients through the patent process.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations.
  • Draft and file patent applications, including preparing detailed patent specifications, claims, and drawings.
  • Conduct patentability and freedom-to-operate analyses, providing strategic advice to clients regarding patent portfolio management.
  • Manage correspondence with the USPTO, including responding to office actions, rejections, and other communications.
  • Advise clients on intellectual property matters, including patent strategy, infringement issues, and patent enforcement.
  • Collaborate with inventors, engineers, and other professionals to gather technical information and draft accurate patent applications.
  • Provide support in patent-related litigation, including assisting with discovery, preparing expert reports, and presenting evidence.
  • Stay updated on changes in patent laws, regulations, and industry trends to provide informed legal advice.
  • Maintain detailed records of patent filings, correspondence, and case status.

Requirements:

  • USPTO registered patent attorney with a current registration with the United States Patent Office Bar.
  • Admission to the Maryland Bar is preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience with USPTO patent prosecution is required.
  • Some experience in patent litigation is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of patent laws and regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Admission to the Maryland Bar (preferred).
