Job Overview

A law firm in Washington, DC, seeks a skilled and dedicated Patent Agent to join their Intellectual Property (IP) team. The ideal candidate will work closely with IP attorneys to draft and prosecute patent applications, conduct patentability assessments, and assist in litigation and other proceedings. This role requires a strong background in mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering and significant experience in patent law and prosecution.

Duties

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Assist IP attorneys in representing clients in Patent Office proceedings, patent litigation, and general patent prosecution matters.
  • Complete patentability assessments and conduct third-party patent searches.
  • Conduct patent diligence for mergers and acquisitions.
  • Assist with patent clearance and enforcement projects as needed.
  • Collaborate with the IP team to meet clients' patent and technology needs.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of intellectual property experience, particularly in patent transactional matters.
  • Proven experience in prosecuting patent applications in mechanical and electrical engineering fields.
  • Strong preference for candidates with additional experience in chemistry or biochemistry.
  • USPTO registration number.
  • Excellent time management skills, capable of working independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Education

  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Advanced technical degree preferred.

Certifications

  • USPTO registration.

  • Well-developed patent application drafting and prosecution skills.
  • Strong patent database search capabilities.
  • Substantive academic and professional knowledge.
