Job Overview:

A respected law firm based in New York City is looking to engage an experienced Patent Agent to support its expanding portfolio in intellectual property, particularly within biotechnology and life sciences. The role involves a diverse range of patent-related activities in a collaborative legal environment. This is a unique opportunity for a technically trained professional with a deep understanding of the patent lifecycle to play a pivotal role in innovation protection and strategy.

Duties:

• Assess the patent eligibility of new scientific concepts and technological developments across various domains

• Prepare, draft, and file patent applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

• Lead the prosecution of domestic patent filings and liaise with global counsel for coordination of international submissions

• Assist in intellectual property due diligence for transactional matters

• Manage strategic patent portfolio development and maintenance

• Conduct research and provide insights on technical and legal issues related to IP law

• Collaborate cross-functionally with legal teams, scientific stakeholders, and clients on IP strategy formulation

• Interface with both internal departments and external counsel to ensure cohesive IP-related initiatives

Requirements:

• At least 4 years of hands-on experience in patent prosecution within either a legal practice or a corporate setting

• Proven expertise in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or medical technology sectors

• Prior exposure to international patent coordination preferred

• Familiarity with mechanical or electrical inventions is advantageous

Education:

• Doctorate (Ph.D.) in a life sciences field such as molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, or a related discipline

Certifications:

• Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, or eligible to take the Patent Bar in the near term

Skills:

• Strong command of scientific and technical subject matter within the life sciences domain

• Exceptional legal writing, communication, and analytical skills

• Ability to thrive in a collaborative, team-driven environment

• Detail-oriented with excellent organizational capabilities

• Adaptability and strategic thinking in managing complex patent matters
