A law firm seeks a highly qualified Patent Prosecution & Litigation Associate to join its Electrical Engineering & Software Team in Houston, TX. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology in the realm of patent law, with a focus on electrical engineering, software, and computer science. Ideal candidates will have a background in IP law, patent prosecution, and experience with technologies like networking, wireless networks, or software systems.

Duties:

  • Assist with patent prosecution, including drafting and filing patent applications for electrical engineering and software innovations.
  • Handle patent litigation matters, representing clients in disputes related to IP rights and patent infringements.
  • Provide legal guidance and support for clients regarding patent portfolios, patentability assessments, and IP strategy.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to understand and assess the technical aspects of inventions.
  • Conduct thorough research and analysis on technical and legal issues.
  • Prepare and review legal documents such as patent applications, responses to office actions, and briefs.

Requirements:

  • 2-6 years of experience in IP law, with a focus on patent prosecution and litigation.
  • Background in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related technical field.
  • Design engineering experience, particularly with chip companies, is a plus.
  • Experience with technologies such as networking, wireless networks (3G/4G/5G), or similar fields is preferred.
  • Must be a member of the USPTO and have the ability to work with patent filings.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Associate candidates must be licensed to practice law or able to become licensed in the jurisdiction where they will work. A California bar license is a plus.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • A technical degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field is required.

Certifications:

  • Active registration with the USPTO.
  • Admission to the state bar (or eligibility to obtain licensure).

Skills:

  • Strong proficiency in drafting and prosecuting patents in the electrical engineering and software sectors.
  • Knowledge of patent litigation processes and legal strategies.
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, understandable legal language.
  • Proficient in patent search tools and patent databases.
  • Experience in patentability and infringement analysis.
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy in legal and technical work.
