A law firm in New York City is seeking a highly skilled BIS, OFAC, and International Trade Lawyer. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in U.S. export controls, sanctions, customs, and other international trade regulations. This role involves providing expert counseling, training, and compliance support, along with handling government enforcement actions and developing compliance policies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Counsel clients on U.S. export controls (BIS), sanctions (OFAC), customs (including tariffs), and other international trade regulations.
  • Provide training and educational sessions on compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • Handle licensing matters, including applications and renewals.
  • Draft and review legal opinions related to international trade and sanctions.
  • Conduct compliance audits and internal investigations to ensure adherence to regulations.
  • Respond to government enforcement actions and develop strategies for mitigation.
  • Develop and implement compliance policies and procedures tailored to clients' needs.
  • Manage investigations related to FCPA (Foreign Corrupt Practices Act) and national security matters (CFIUS).

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience with U.S. export controls, OFAC sanctions, customs regulations, and other international trade laws.
  • Proven experience in counseling, training, licensing, opinion work, filings, compliance audits, and internal investigations.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Must be an active member of the DC Bar or be willing to apply for membership within 90 days of employment at the firm.
  • Experience with investigations related to FCPA and/or national security matters (CFIUS) is preferred.
  • Strong academic credentials from a top-tier law school (U.S. JD required).
  • Prior work experience within a large law firm is preferred.

Education and Certifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from a top-tier U.S. law school.
  • Active membership in the DC Bar, or willingness to obtain within 90 days of employment.

Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of BIS, OFAC, and international trade regulations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to handle complex regulatory issues and compliance matters.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement effective compliance policies and procedures.
