Job Overview:
A law firm is seeking a highly skilled Patent Agent to join its Intellectual Property team. This role involves preparing patent applications, drafting responses to communications from the USPTO, and assisting attorneys in delivering high-quality legal services. The ideal candidate will have expertise in technology, particularly in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering. A proactive and detail-oriented individual is essential for managing complex and sensitive client work. Experience with patent prosecution is preferred but not required. This position offers a hybrid work model with office locations in multiple cities.

Location:

  • New York City, NY

Duties:

  • Prepare draft patent applications, incorporating scientific and technological aspects of inventions.
  • Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices concerning technical and factual matters.
  • Discuss the scientific aspects of inventions with clients and inventors, then provide attorneys with reports on these discussions.
  • Act as a liaison between inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office (PTO) throughout the patent application process.
  • Evaluate technological aspects of inventions and advise attorneys on related technologies.
  • Organize, analyze, and summarize documents related to patent filings.
  • Review and analyze client files and conduct regulatory and factual research.
  • Communicate with clients, staff, vendors, and PTO personnel by email, phone, and in person.
  • Coordinate workflow with outside service providers to ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines in an efficient manner.
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve complex patent issues.
  • Provide direction and guidance to legal support staff as necessary.
  • Stay informed of emerging technology trends and advise on related needs.
  • Participate in continuing education to maintain current knowledge of patent prosecution trends.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret research findings and prepare detailed reports.

  • Expertise in drafting complex patent documentation in a technology-focused area.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical and factual information effectively.

  • Ability to understand and comply with confidentiality and ethical responsibilities.
  • Willingness to travel locally and out of town as necessary to meet client needs.
  • Flexibility to work overtime, including evenings and weekends, as required.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field (preferred).

Certifications:

  • Licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (preferred).
