Job Overview

A law firm seeks an Energy Regulatory Associate Attorney to join its legal team in Austin. This role offers an exciting opportunity for an attorney with a solid foundation in litigation to expand their expertise into regulatory matters impacting the energy sector. The selected candidate will contribute to a variety of cases involving public utility regulation, administrative proceedings, and property rights while gaining exposure to Texas-specific regulatory bodies and legal frameworks.

Duties

  • Draft, review, and file legal documents including pleadings, discovery requests, motions, and case-related correspondence.
  • Conduct legal research on regulatory policies, administrative rulings, and relevant case law affecting the energy industry.
  • Represent clients in hearings, administrative proceedings, and regulatory investigations.
  • Collaborate with senior attorneys to develop case strategies, prepare for hearings, and counsel clients on regulatory compliance.
  • Stay informed on evolving energy policies, regulatory updates, and legislative changes that impact the firm’s clients.
  • Advise clients on regulatory requirements related to utility operations, energy infrastructure development, and land use.
  • Analyze complex legal and regulatory issues and prepare clear, comprehensive reports for internal and client use.

Requirements

  • 2 to 6 years of experience handling litigation matters, with preference for candidates who have worked on regulatory issues.
  • Familiarity with drafting motions, managing discovery, and preparing for hearings in administrative or civil proceedings.
  • Interest in or prior exposure to energy-related legal matters, including electric utilities, power markets, regulatory enforcement, or infrastructure projects.
  • Strong legal research and analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex regulations and policies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively advocate for clients and explain regulatory issues.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in Texas.

Certifications

  • Member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.

Skills

  • Proficiency with legal research platforms and case management tools.
  • Ability to distill complex legal information into clear, actionable advice for clients.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in legal writing and analysis.
  • Effective time management and organizational abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships with clients, colleagues, and regulatory professionals.
  • Experience handling matters before Texas regulatory agencies (such as the Public Utility Commission of Texas or the Railroad Commission of Texas) is a plus.
