A law firm seeks a Workers' Compensation Defense Attorney to join its Chicago, IL office. This position is ideal for an experienced attorney who has a background in defending workers' compensation claims in Illinois. The successful candidate will represent employers and insurers, handling a wide variety of cases and working closely with clients to manage risk and litigation. Duties:

  • Review and analyze medical evidence and records related to workers' compensation claims.
  • Take depositions from claimants, physicians, medical experts, and other relevant parties.
  • Conduct discovery and perform legal research to stay updated on changes in law.
  • Draft legal documents such as pleadings, findings of fact, motions, briefs, and opinions.
  • Litigate workers' compensation cases before an administrative law judge.
  • Represent the employer or insurer in hearings, trials, depositions, mediations, arbitrations, and other proceedings.
  • Communicate regularly with claims representatives to address ongoing case matters.
  • Monitor and analyze loss run reports to identify trends and address potential issues.
  • Assist in investigating workplace accidents and identifying areas of concern.
  • Manage workers' compensation costs and recommend strategies to minimize liability.
  • Compile and submit necessary reports for company management.
  • Negotiate settlements on behalf of the employer or insurer.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Illinois State Bar; additional Midwest state bar admissions are a plus.
  • At least 3 years of experience defending workers' compensation claims.
  • Strong understanding of workers' compensation laws and related regulations.
  • Familiarity with legal research techniques and terminology.
  • Proven experience handling litigation and trials in workers' compensation cases.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook; experience with Perfect Law legal software is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to maintain confidentiality.

Education:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Active membership in the Illinois Bar (other Midwest state bars a plus).

Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent legal research and analytical skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with Perfect Law legal software (preferred).
  • Ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent problem-solving abilities.
  • Negotiation skills for settlements and claims management.
