Job Overview:
A distinguished law firm based in Miami, FL is actively seeking a highly experienced Patent Specialist to collaborate closely with legal teams in the development and protection of intellectual property assets, particularly in the life sciences arena. This role requires a strategic thinker with a strong scientific foundation who can support sophisticated patent prosecution and IP portfolio management efforts.

Duties:

  • Conduct assessments on the patentability of scientific and technological innovations

  • Prepare and submit patent applications within the United States

  • Manage prosecution of U.S. patent applications and coordinate with international counsel for global filings

  • Contribute to intellectual property due diligence and strategic IP portfolio evaluations

  • Perform detailed legal and scientific research related to patent and IP matters

  • Engage in cross-functional discussions with legal teams, clients, and stakeholders to craft robust IP strategies

  • Act as a bridge between departments and maintain communication with external legal counsel

Requirements:

  • At least 4 years of hands-on experience handling patent prosecution in either a law firm or corporate legal department

  • Proven expertise in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or medical devices

  • U.S. Patent and Trademark Office registration (or near-term eligibility for the Patent Bar)

  • Familiarity with electrical or mechanical patent work is advantageous

  • Demonstrated ability to assess scientific disclosures and navigate complex technical subject matter

Education:

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in a relevant life sciences discipline such as molecular biology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, or related field

Certifications:

  • USPTO Registration Number (or demonstrable eligibility to take the Patent Bar)

Skills:

  • Deep scientific literacy in the life sciences domain

  • Strong written and verbal communication capabilities

  • Capacity to collaborate effectively across teams and with external partners

  • Strategic thinking paired with precision in legal and technical writing

  • Analytical mindset with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
