Title: Intellectual Property Associate Attorney

Job Overview: A leading law firm based in Chicago, IL, is seeking an experienced Intellectual Property Associate Attorney to join its Biotechnology Practice Group. The successful candidate will play a key role in patent preparation, prosecution, and client counseling, working with some of the world’s largest and most technologically advanced companies. Duties:

  • Conduct interviews with inventors to gain an understanding of new ideas for patenting.
  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications.
  • Investigate and prepare non-infringement and invalidity opinions.
  • Provide technical support for patent litigation.
  • Advise clients on intellectual property matters under the guidance of senior attorneys.
  • Maintain open communication with clients, including domestic and international corporations.
  • Review patent and non-patent literature to extract key concepts.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in life sciences, focusing on patent preparation and prosecution.
  • Experience working with patents in the biotechnology or molecular biology sectors.
  • Admission to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to grasp complex technical teachings quickly.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to a diverse audience.

Education:

  • Master’s or Doctorate in Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
  • Strong academic record, with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is required.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in patent preparation and prosecution.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with senior attorneys.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for maintaining client relationships.
  • High attention to detail in both legal and technical work.
