A law firm seeks an experienced Attorney for its regulatory, safety, and environmental law practice. Based in Iowa, the attorney will focus on representing generation and transmission cooperatives, their member distribution cooperatives, and affiliated associations. This role involves identifying and mitigating legal risks in various regulatory areas, providing counsel, and offering training to cooperative management. The position requires strong legal acumen, the ability to work autonomously, and a collaborative approach to guiding clients through complex regulatory landscapes.

Duties:

  • Identify and assess operational and systemic issues in environmental, worker safety, commercial carrier, disaster recovery, employment, and other state and federal regulatory areas to ensure compliance with relevant laws.
  • Advise cooperatives and their members on regulatory issues and legal risks related to the aforementioned areas.
  • Collaborate with cooperative staff, boards, management, and officers to address legal concerns and enhance operational compliance.
  • Communicate with public, private, and governmental officials regarding legal matters.
  • Develop and provide training programs for Iowa’s cooperatives and their members.
  • Assist cooperative management and boards in responding to current or potential risks, including securing the services of external consultants for training and education.
  • Provide ongoing legal counsel to help manage risk and ensure regulatory compliance.

Requirements:

  • At least five (5) years of successful and responsible experience in the practice of law.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state law in areas such as environmental law, worker safety, commercial carrier regulations, disaster recovery, and utility law.
  • Experience working with federal and state regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and manage legal matters independently.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven experience in offering guidance and training to clients in regulatory compliance matters.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively to solve legal challenges within a team-oriented environment.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Iowa.

Skills:

  • In-depth understanding of federal and state regulatory frameworks related to environmental, safety, and utility law.
  • Ability to assess legal risks and develop effective solutions for clients.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
