A law firm seeks an IP Associate to join its highly regarded Intellectual Property team in Carmel, IN. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in patent prosecution, specifically in mechanical, electrical, and/or software technologies. This role offers the opportunity to work on complex, cutting-edge patent matters and collaborate with a diverse range of clients. Strong writing, communication, and interpersonal skills are key, as well as the ability to manage both domestic and international patent filings.

Duties

  • Draft, prosecute, and manage patent applications in the US and abroad, focusing on mechanical, electrical, and software innovations.
  • Work closely with clients to develop patent strategies and ensure robust portfolio management.
  • Conduct patentability assessments and provide clear opinions on freedom to operate.
  • Handle responses to office actions and engage with patent offices in various jurisdictions.
  • Review and evaluate invention disclosures from clients, providing strategic recommendations.
  • Assist with the overall management of clients’ patent portfolios.
  • Support litigation teams by contributing technical expertise and performing legal research.

Requirements

  • 2-4 years of experience in patent prosecution, specifically in mechanical, electrical, or software technologies.
  • Familiarity with US and international patent law and procedures.
  • Strong ability to draft and prosecute patent applications effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact with clients and patent office representatives.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Education

  • A degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field is required.
  • A Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant technical field is a plus.

Certifications

  • Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
