A law firm seeks a motivated and self-driven Associate Attorney to join its team in Sioux Falls, SD. This is an exciting opportunity for a recent law school graduate or an attorney with up to 3 years of experience in family law and criminal defense. The ideal candidate will be comfortable managing a diverse caseload, including state criminal defense and family law matters while utilizing legal research tools such as Westlaw and local public legal databases. Duties

  • Manage a varied caseload, including criminal defense (misdemeanors, low-level felonies, and abuse/neglect of minors cases) and family law matters (divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support).
  • Provide clients with sound legal advice, represent them in court, and handle negotiations.
  • Draft legal documents such as motions, pleadings, and agreements.
  • Conduct legal research using tools like Westlaw and local public resources, including the South Dakota Legislative Research Council and Unified Judicial System.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and clients to ensure favorable outcomes in all cases.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, keeping them informed of case progress and ensuring a high level of client satisfaction.
  • Maintain accurate case files and document all case activities in the case management system.

Requirements

  • 0-3 years of professional legal experience.
  • Licensed to practice law by the South Dakota Supreme Court.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software and case management software.
  • Experience using legal research tools like Westlaw and South Dakota’s public legal research resources.
  • Strong analytical, writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle a caseload with diverse legal matters and prioritize effectively.
  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to learning and professional growth.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications

  • Licensed to practice law in South Dakota.
