Job Overview

A growing law firm is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Attorney to join its team. The position will be based in Fairfax, VA, with the flexibility of hybrid remote work. The ideal candidate will have a passion for advocating for the rights of children with disabilities and helping families navigate the complexities of special education laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. While prior special education experience is preferred, the firm will consider other relevant professional or life experience.

Duties

  • Represent families of children with disabilities in navigating special education laws and ensuring access to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).
  • Advocate for parents at initial screenings, eligibility meetings, IEP meetings, Section 504 meetings, and other relevant school meetings.
  • Represent clients in due process hearings, judicial proceedings, discipline hearings, administrative agency complaints, and mediation.
  • Review and analyze special education documents, including student files, assessments, IEPs, and Section 504 Plans.
  • Propose IEP goals and objectives, assess evidence, and help craft written concerns and requests for meetings.
  • Assist parents in understanding educational assessments, evaluations, and reports.
  • Advise on appropriate special education services, accommodations, and modifications.
  • Draft formal letters, written requests to school districts, and complaints to school districts or the Virginia Department of Education.
  • Educate and empower parents/guardians and students to improve their advocacy skills.
  • Participate in additional projects such as presentations and community outreach when needed.

Requirements

  • Strong analytical, advocacy, and writing skills.
  • Creative thinker with the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Virginia State Bar license required.
  • Special education experience is a plus, but other relevant professional or life experience will be considered.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications

  • Active license to practice law in the state of Virginia.
