A respected law firm in Grand Rapids, Michigan is currently seeking an experienced Environmental Attorney to handle a wide range of natural resources and environmental matters. This role is ideal for a self-motivated legal professional with strong expertise in federal and state environmental law, including permitting, regulatory compliance, and enforcement. The position offers opportunities to work independently and collaboratively on diverse and complex legal challenges within a supportive and flexible work environment.

Duties

  • Handle matters involving:

    • Natural resources laws related to wetlands, sand dunes, and riparian rights

    • Environmental permitting and administrative appeals

    • Enforcement actions under state and federal regulations

  • Engage in legal work related to:

    • Environmental due diligence

    • Site remediation

    • Brownfield redevelopment projects

    • Insurance claims and environmental dispute resolution

    • Regulatory audits and litigation

  • Advise clients on compliance and strategic risk management

  • Collaborate with internal teams across disciplines to support client needs

  • Provide advocacy and representation in administrative hearings and legal proceedings

Requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in environmental or natural resources law

  • Knowledge of Michigan environmental law preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex legal matters with minimal supervision

  • Excellent client service skills with a problem-solving mindset

  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration abilities

  • A transferrable book of business is not required but will be considered a plus

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school

Certifications

  • Active license to practice law in Michigan (or ability to obtain admission)
