Job Overview: A law firm located in Chicago, IL is seeking a highly skilled Life Sciences Patent Agent to join their team. The ideal candidate will be a USPTO registered Patent Agent with substantial experience in patent prosecution within the Life Sciences sector. The role requires a detail-oriented individual with strong writing and verbal communication skills, and proficiency in technical writing is highly desirable. An advanced degree or equivalent experience in Life Sciences, particularly in molecular biology, is preferred.

Duties:

  • Manage and oversee patent prosecution activities for Life Sciences-related inventions.
  • Prepare and file patent applications with the USPTO and other relevant patent offices.
  • Conduct prior art searches and prepare detailed patentability opinions.
  • Draft and prosecute patent claims, amendments, and responses to office actions.
  • Collaborate with inventors and clients to gather technical information and refine patent applications.
  • Monitor and manage patent portfolios and ensure timely filing of necessary documentation.
  • Provide guidance on patent strategy and intellectual property issues related to Life Sciences.
  • Review and analyze patent-related agreements and documents.

Requirements:

  • USPTO registration as a Patent Agent is mandatory.
  • At least 3 years of direct patent prosecution experience, preferably in the Life Sciences field.
  • Advanced degree in a Life Sciences discipline or commensurate experience.
  • Expertise in molecular biology is a significant asset.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Education:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in a Life Sciences field, such as molecular biology, biochemistry, or related discipline, or equivalent experience.

Certifications:

  • USPTO registration as a Patent Agent.

Skills:

  • Strong writing skills with the ability to draft clear, concise patent applications and technical documents.
  • Detail-oriented with a keen eye for accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills for effective collaboration with clients and colleagues.
