Job Overview: A well-established law firm in New York City is seeking an experienced attorney to join its Social Security Disability (SSD) team. The firm has been advocating for the rights of New Yorkers for over 80 years, specializing in Social Security Disability, Workers’ Compensation, Civil Service Disability Pensions, and Personal Injury claims. This role involves managing a significant caseload and requires expertise in SSD law, strong ethical standards, and excellent communication skills.

Duties:

  • Case Management:

    • Handle a large volume of Social Security Disability cases, ensuring each case is effectively managed.
    • Prepare and file appeals for denied claims and ensure all applications are completed accurately.
    • Conduct opening and closing arguments, and direct and cross-examine witnesses during hearings.
    • Maintain a thorough understanding of case records to represent clients effectively.
  • Client and Agency Communication:

    • Serve as a primary point of contact with the Social Security Administration on behalf of clients.
    • Gather necessary medical records and other documentation to support client claims.
    • Communicate regularly with clients to provide updates on case progress.
  • Travel Requirements:

    • Ability to travel between New York boroughs, primarily Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, for hearings and client meetings.

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience in Social Security Disability law (preferred).
  • Valid New York State Bar membership (preferred).

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Active member of the New York State Bar, or ability to obtain NYS Bar membership.

Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to empathize with clients facing challenging circumstances.
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills to manage multiple cases simultaneously.
  • Excellent time management skills to meet case deadlines and handle a fast-paced workload.
  • Proficiency in legal principles and terminology related to Social Security Disability law.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to navigate complex cases.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Multilingual abilities (Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Russian, Creole) are a plus.
