Job Overview: A distinguished law firm in Washington, DC, is seeking a seasoned trial attorney with extensive experience in criminal defense. This role involves managing a substantial caseload within the District of Columbia Superior Court and Federal District Court for the District of Columbia, handling cases ranging from DUI and traffic offenses to serious felonies and federal charges. The ideal candidate will have a robust background in criminal defense, a dedication to client advocacy, and strong courtroom skills. This position is especially suited for individuals transitioning from indigent defense or public defense who wish to move into private practice.

Location:

  • Washington, DC

Duties:

  • Conduct legal research and draft briefs, pleadings, and motions
  • Represent clients in court hearings and argue motions on their behalf
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of local, state, and federal statutes and laws
  • Conduct consultations with potential new clients and maintain client relationships
  • Represent clients at all stages of legal proceedings, including case investigations, plea negotiations, motions practice, trial, and sentencing
  • Manage a caseload of 40-60 cases
  • Draft Motions to Seal and other relevant pleadings
  • Represent clients in civil protection order matters as needed

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in criminal defense, with a solid understanding of trial and litigation processes
  • Strong capability to manage a substantial caseload independently
  • Passionate and dedicated to client advocacy
  • Must be barred in the District of Columbia

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree from an accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Active member in good standing with the DC Bar

Skills:

  • Extensive trial and courtroom experience in criminal law
  • Proficiency in legal research, drafting, and motions practice
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for client interactions
  • Ability to work independently with strong organizational skills
  • Fluency in Spanish is highly desirable
