A law firm is seeking a Briefing Attorney (Brief Writer) for its Houston, TX, location. The attorney will primarily research essential and complex legal issues in personal injury cases and draft briefs while closely collaborating with the Managing Partner. This role focuses on research and writing tasks, including document preparation and mailing.

Duties:

  • Conduct in-depth research on complex legal issues in personal injury cases
  • Draft concise and compelling briefs and focusing on legal arguments and precedent
  • Work closely with the Managing Partner to develop case strategies and arguments
  • Prepare and mail legal documents as needed
  • Maintain superior organization of case files and documents
  • Ensure compliance with legal deadlines and court rules
  • Utilize computer literacy to work efficiently with legal software and tools
  • Demonstrate proficiency in MS Office, with a strong emphasis on MS Word
  • Preferably, have experience with Smart Advocate and Mac OS X
  • Comfortably handle VOIP phones for communication needs
  • Possess a strong understanding of litigation strategy and personal injury law
  • Exhibit exceptional writing skills with precise legal analysis and argumentation
  • Conduct thorough legal research with accurate footnote citations
  • Write documents without dictation or transcription, relying on document review
  • Utilize Bluebook citation format accurately and consistently
  • File documents in state court independently
  • Demonstrate proficiency in independent document review processes
  • Be available for occasional after-hours, holiday, and weekend work with notice

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Juris Doctor (JD) required
  • 7+ years of trial court legal writing experience (appellate work not helpful)
  • 5+ years of plaintiff's personal injury experience
  • Minimum 2 years of consecutive employment at a single company
  • 5+ years of brief writing experience in plaintiff's personal injury cases
  • Strong understanding of personal injury/mass torts litigation
  • Strong knowledge of state and federal court rules
  • Superior level of organization and attention to detail
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in MS Office, with superior proficiency in MS Word
  • Proficiency in Smart Advocate and Mac OS X preferred
  • Comfortability with VOIP phones preferred
