Job Overview
A law firm based in New York City is currently seeking a Special Education Attorney to represent families navigating the complexities of special education law under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The role involves advocating for children with special needs in administrative hearings and ensuring they receive the appropriate educational services. Strong litigation skills and a passion for making a meaningful difference in the lives of families are essential.

Duties

• Represent families in due process hearings and settlement negotiations.
• Develop and implement individualized legal strategies for each client.
• Collaborate with a legal team to prepare case files, including drafting due process complaints and other necessary legal documents.
• Advocate for the educational rights of children, ensuring they are provided with the appropriate services and placements as mandated by law.
• Maintain an organized caseload and adhere to all legal deadlines.

Requirements

• At least 1 year of experience practicing special education law.
• Familiarity with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and related special education laws.
• Proven ability to write clear, concise legal documents.
• Strong verbal communication skills, with an emphasis on advocacy and negotiation.
• Self-motivated with the ability to independently manage a caseload in a fast-paced environment.
• Proven commitment to improving the lives of families and children with special needs.
• Remote work setup required.
• An active New York State Bar license is mandatory.

Education

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
