Job Overview:
A law firm is seeking an Associate Immigration Attorney to join its team in Independence, OH. The attorney will handle various immigration cases, including family-based adjustment of status, humanitarian cases (U Visas, VAWA, Asylum), and removal defense (Immigration Court litigation). The ideal candidate will have 1-2 years of experience in immigration law, a passion for the field, and the ability to work under pressure while meeting deadlines. The attorney will also manage high-volume cases with defined filing schedules and be responsible for supervising paralegals.

Location:

  • Independence, OH

Duties:

  • Consult and work directly with clients on immigration matters before USCIS and the Executive Office of Immigration Review (Immigration Court)
  • Prepare Asylum and Cancellation of Removal cases for trial, including preparing clients and witnesses before hearings, and appearing in Immigration Court
  • Screen legal issues and develop case strategies
  • Draft motions and legal briefs
  • Stay updated on immigration policy and law developments
  • Supervise and train paralegals as needed
  • Participate in community and business development activities on behalf of the firm

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in immigration law
  • Previous experience working as an attorney in private practice preferred
  • Excellent writing, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and stay organized in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to manage cases independently with minimal supervision
  • Prior removal defense experience highly preferred
  • Second language fluency is a plus

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Admission to practice law in the relevant state (Ohio Bar or other state bar association)

Skills:

  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage a high-volume caseload
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
  • Leadership and supervisory skills for managing paralegal work
