Associate Attorney – Immigration & Crimmigration Law

Job Overview:
A respected law firm based in Des Moines, IA is seeking an Associate Attorney with a passion for defending clients at the intersection of immigration and criminal law an area often referred to as “crimmigration.” This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful legal work that impacts clients’ lives on a fundamental level. The attorney will work closely with seasoned legal professionals in a collaborative environment to handle cases involving immigration consequences of criminal activity, appellate proceedings, and post-conviction relief.

Duties:

  • Conduct comprehensive legal research and provide analysis on complex immigration and criminal matters

  • Prepare and revise legal documents including motions, briefs, and pleadings

  • Advise clients on immigration status implications tied to criminal charges or convictions

  • Manage and maintain case files, ensuring compliance with procedural standards

  • Partner with other legal professionals on case strategies and litigation plans

  • Monitor and interpret developments in legislation and legal precedents relevant to crimmigration

  • Represent clients in court proceedings and before immigration authorities when necessary

Requirements:

  • Licensed to practice law in Iowa, or ability to obtain licensure promptly

  • Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated experience or strong interest in immigration, criminal defense, or appellate law

  • Comfortable working with diverse populations in sensitive or high-stakes cases

  • Strong interpersonal skills and client service orientation

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Active Bar membership in Iowa (or eligible for admission)

Skills:

  • Advanced legal research proficiency using platforms such as Westlaw

  • Strong legal writing and document drafting capabilities

  • Clear and persuasive communication skills, both oral and written

  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, and manage deadlines across multiple active cases

  • High attention to detail and organizational discipline
