The ideal candidate will have a strong background in representing various non-profit entities, including public charities, major educational institutions, healthcare organizations, and private foundations. This role requires comprehensive knowledge of federal tax law as it applies to charitable and tax-exempt organizations, including endowment, governance, and investment.

Duties:

  • Represent various non-profit organizations, including public charities, colleges and universities, hospitals, and private foundations.
  • Provide expert legal counsel on federal tax compliance for charitable and tax-exempt organizations.
  • Address governance issues, endowment management, and investment matters for non-profit clients.
  • Advise on federal tax rules applicable to private foundations, including self-dealing, excess business holdings, and taxable expenditures.
  • Counsel clients on participation in joint ventures and implications of unrelated trade or business activities.
  • Draft and review legal documents, including tax-exempt status applications and compliance reports.
  • Assist with audits and inquiries from the IRS or other regulatory bodies.
  • Stay current on changes in federal tax laws and regulations affecting non-profit organizations.
  • Develop and deliver presentations and training on tax-related matters for non-profit clients.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Bar in Washington, DC.
  • Experience in tax law, focusing on non-profit organizations.
  • Proven track record of working with various non-profit entities and handling complex tax issues.
  • Excellent analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Education:

  • JD degree from an accredited law school.
  • Undergraduate degree in a related field (e.g., accounting, finance, or business) is preferred.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the Bar in Washington, DC is required.
  • Additional certifications or specializations in tax law or non-profit management are a plus.

Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of federal tax laws and regulations affecting non-profit organizations.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple complex cases and projects.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficient in legal research and document preparation.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain client relationships.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
