Job Overview:

A top-tier law firm is seeking a Legal Innovation Counsel to play a strategic role in transforming legal service delivery through practice-specific innovation and legal technology initiatives. This position supports the implementation of cutting-edge tools and processes that improve legal workflows, client service, and operational efficiency across multiple practice areas. Reporting to the Lead Innovation Counsel, this role works closely with legal, technology, and operations teams to ensure the firm remains at the forefront of legal innovation.

Location:

  • Los Angeles, CA

Duties:

  • Contribute legal insight and direction to practice group-focused legal technology adoption

  • Develop practical playbooks that support best practices in legal tech use

  • Lead the creation of presentations, status reports, and executive briefings

  • Actively participate in the prioritization of innovation projects in coordination with firm leadership

  • Collaborate with innovation and technology teams to define goals, success metrics, and project timelines

  • Analyze legal workflows to identify opportunities for optimization and automation

  • Drive technology pilots, proofs of concept, and firmwide rollouts

  • Partner with change management teams to develop strategic communication plans and change metrics

  • Create and manage legal resource materials tailored to specific practice group needs

  • Support ongoing innovation efforts and adapt to evolving firm objectives

Requirements:

  • Minimum 4 years of relevant legal practice or legal tech implementation experience

  • Active member in good standing of the bar (or registered in-house counsel) in applicable jurisdictions

  • Experience leading cross-functional projects with legal, knowledge, and technology teams

  • Strong understanding of financial operations and work allocation in large law firms

  • Willingness to work extended or weekend hours as needed

  • Availability for occasional travel

  • Ability to become proficient in firm-specific applications such as Microsoft Office and iManage (post-orientation)

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or international equivalent

Certifications:

  • Valid bar license or registered in-house counsel status in appropriate jurisdictions

Skills:

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication

  • Proven ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable legal applications

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Detail-oriented with the ability to maintain focus on larger strategic goals

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across departments (legal, operations, IT, etc.)

  • Skilled in legal workflow analysis and implementation of technology-driven solutions

  • Familiarity with large law firm software such as:

    • iManage / NetDocs

    • Elite 3E

    • Intapp

    • Litera Suite

    • LexisNexis and Thomson Reuters platforms

  • Experience working with alternative legal service providers or managed service models

  • Ability to use technology usage data and metrics for strategic storytelling

  • Experience with or knowledge of generative AI in legal contexts (preferred)

  • Strong presentation skills for diverse internal audiences
