Job Overview
A prominent law firm based in Charlotte, NC, is currently seeking an experienced Patent Attorney with expertise in life sciences disciplines to join its distinguished Intellectual Property practice group. The ideal candidate will possess advanced technical knowledge and a passion for patent prosecution, with a focus on innovative technologies in life sciences fields such as chemistry, biochemistry, and medical devices. The firm is looking for a dedicated professional to contribute to their growing IP practice while supporting a diverse range of clients.

Duties

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications, working on cutting-edge scientific inventions.
  • Conduct in-depth technical research to assess new technologies and translate complex scientific concepts into patent applications.
  • Work closely with inventors to craft high-quality patent submissions.
  • Respond to Office Actions, addressing objections, rejections, and amendments with clarity and precision.
  • Prepare freedom-to-operate opinions and novelty assessments to support clients' business strategies.
  • Perform due diligence on intellectual property assets and manage portfolios.
  • Mentor and guide junior attorneys and associates, fostering a collaborative team environment.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree.
  • A PhD in a life sciences discipline, such as Chemistry, Biochemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Medical Devices, or related fields.
  • At least 5 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution, particularly in the life sciences sector.
  • Registered and in good standing with the USPTO.
  • Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, capable of distilling complex scientific principles into clear patent claims.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree.
  • Doctorate (PhD) in a relevant life sciences field, such as Chemistry, Biochemistry, Medical Devices, or Polymer Chemistry.

Certifications

  • Registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.

  • Expertise in patent prosecution and preparation, with a specific focus on life sciences technologies.
  • Excellent scientific and technical ability, particularly in chemistry, biochemistry, and related fields.
