Job Overview
A growing law firm is seeking an experienced Oil & Gas Associate to join its team in the San Antonio office. This position primarily involves preparing oil and gas title opinions in Texas and New Mexico, as well as providing regulatory advice in New Mexico with a focus on compulsory pooling. The ideal candidate will have 2 to 5 years of relevant experience in oil and gas law, including in-house work, title opinion drafting, or field land management. Candidates must be licensed in Texas or New Mexico.

Duties

  • Draft and deliver oil and gas title opinions and legal memoranda addressing title, operational, and regulatory law issues.
  • Provide legal guidance on land transactions, acquisitions, leases, and related real estate matters.
  • Identify and mitigate legal risks, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Support due diligence efforts on property and title matters.
  • Collaborate with internal teams such as land, operations, and finance to support strategic initiatives.
  • Actively participate in quarterly planning sessions and help set and achieve individual priorities aligned with the firm’s goals.
  • Contribute to non-billable process improvement projects.

Requirements

  • Active law license in Texas or New Mexico (candidates licensed in Oklahoma, North Dakota, or Ohio may be considered with adjusted compensation).
  • 2 to 5 years of experience in oil and gas title, transactional, or regulatory law, preferably with experience in a land department, drafting title opinions, or field land management.
  • Exceptional analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality legal work.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications

  • Active membership in the bar of Texas, New Mexico, or another relevant jurisdiction.
