Job Overview: A law firm is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Mid-Level Product Design and User Interface Patent Agent to join its intellectual property practice in Washington, DC. The ideal candidate will work with leading clients in cutting-edge technology fields, including software, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and quantum technologies. This role requires a strong background in patent preparation and prosecution, with a particular focus on product design, user interface technologies, and innovative software solutions. The position offers an opportunity to work closely with top-tier attorneys and clients on complex and dynamic intellectual property matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, draft, and file patent applications related to product design, user interfaces, software, and emerging technologies.
  • Lead and manage patent prosecution, including preparing responses to USPTO Office Actions and conducting interviews with patent examiners.
  • Conduct thorough patentability assessments and freedom-to-operate analyses for clients in various technological fields.
  • Work closely with inventors, engineers, and technical staff to understand and protect complex technological innovations.
  • Advise clients on intellectual property strategy, including portfolio development and risk management.
  • Support litigation teams as needed with technical expertise and analysis of patent infringement matters.
  • Stay up-to-date with developments in patent law, especially in emerging technology fields such as AI, IoT, and quantum technologies.
  • Ensure compliance with USPTO regulations and filing deadlines.

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) bar.
  • Proven experience working with software-related technologies, AI, IoT, networking, or quantum technologies.
  • Strong background in physics, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret technical documents, patents, and industry standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working within a law firm or a corporate in-house legal team.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Education & Certifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree required.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • Admission to the USPTO is required.

  • In-depth knowledge of patent law and intellectual property processes.
  • Strong technical expertise in software, AI, IoT, networking, and quantum technologies.
