A law firm located in Boston is seeking a Patent Prosecution Associate Attorney to join their intellectual property team. The successful candidate will have experience in patent prosecution and a background in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, physics, or a related field. This role involves assessing scientific literature and patent documents, conducting searches and analyses, drafting patent applications, and working closely with clients on innovative technologies to secure patent protection.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assess scientific literature, patents, and patent application documents in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and related fields.
  • Critique and provide insightful opinions on scientific data related to inventions.
  • Conduct comprehensive searches for relevant scientific articles, patents, and patent application documents.
  • Perform in-depth analyses comparing inventions with existing discoveries or inventions.
  • Identify essential elements, features, or components of inventions.
  • Compose patent applications including a comprehensive background of the invention field, detailed descriptions of critical features and components, and clearly defined claims.
  • Draft responses to patent application rejections from the USPTO and other worldwide patent offices, providing detailed analyses and presenting convincing arguments for patent approval.
  • Conduct clearance studies to assess clients' products with respect to competitor patents.
  • Present ideas and conclusions concisely to colleagues and provide insightful feedback and arguments.
  • Work with clients on innovative technologies to secure patent protection and build IP portfolios.

Requirements:

  • Patent prosecution experience.
  • Degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, physics, or a related field.
  • JD or LLM from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Admitted or eligible for admission in Massachusetts or the District of Columbia.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Master of Laws (LLM) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, physics, or a related field.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the Massachusetts or District of Columbia Bar, or eligibility for admission.

Skills:

  • Ability to balance and prioritize competing responsibilities.
  • Strong organizational skills and extreme attention to detail.
  • Excellent ability to collaborate and work effectively in team settings.
  • Proficiency in drafting and analyzing patent applications and responses.
  • Ability to conduct comprehensive patent and scientific literature searches and analyses.
