Job Overview: A law firm in Lansing, MI, is seeking a skilled Tax Litigation Attorney with at least five years of experience in tax court litigation. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in civil tax controversy, including time spent in both federal and state courts, and a background in the public sector as a trial lawyer. Experience with refund litigation matters and familiarity with the IRS Chief of Counsel, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the DOJ Tax Division is preferred. The successful candidate will be adept at developing business, managing cases, and providing outstanding client service.

Duties:

  • Represent clients in tax court litigation and civil tax controversies.
  • Manage and lead cases from inception to resolution, ensuring all legal strategies are effectively executed.
  • Supervise client interactions, providing expert legal advice and guidance.
  • Handle multiple cases and projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines and maintaining responsiveness.
  • Develop and implement business development strategies, including potentially leveraging a portable business book.
  • Work closely with federal and state courts, including the IRS Chief of Counsel, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the DOJ Tax Division, as applicable.
  • Conducted legal research, prepared legal documents, and represented clients in hearings and negotiations.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in tax court litigation and civil tax controversy.
  • Proven experience in refund litigation matters.
  • Experience with federal and state court trials, preferably including time in the public sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage files, lead cases, and supervise client interactions.
  • Strong business development skills, with a track record of growing a portable business book.
  • Ability to manage multiple cases and projects simultaneously while maintaining high responsiveness.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the Michigan Bar is required.
