Job Title: Employee Benefits Associate Attorney

Job Overview: A prestigious law firm in Chesapeake, VA, is seeking an experienced Employee Benefits Associate Attorney to join their dynamic ESOPs, Benefits & Compensation team. The firm advises a diverse clientele, including privately held, publicly traded, governmental, and tax-exempt organizations on various benefits and compensation matters. The role involves providing counsel on retirement plans, employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs), nonqualified deferred compensation plans, equity compensation, and more, all while contributing to the firm’s continued growth and success.

Duties:

  • Provide legal counsel on employee benefits and executive compensation matters, including retirement plans, ESOPs, nonqualified deferred compensation, and more.

  • Work closely with clients and other attorneys to offer comprehensive advice on complex benefits issues.

  • Assist in the management of the firm’s growing ESOPs practice.

  • Handle M&A transactions, IRS and DOL audits, investigations, and executive employment agreements.

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships.

  • Contribute to business development and help expand the ESOPs, Benefits & Compensation team’s capabilities.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in employee benefits and executive compensation law, ideally within a law firm environment.

  • Previous experience with private-company ESOPs is advantageous but not mandatory.

  • Strong commitment to the long-term practice of employee benefits and executive compensation.

  • Ability to work independently and proactively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.

  • Admission to the Virginia or North Carolina Bar (or eligibility to obtain and maintain good standing in the relevant jurisdiction).

Certifications:

  • Admission to the Virginia or North Carolina Bar (or ability to become licensed and remain in good standing).

Skills:

  • Expertise in employee benefits, retirement plans, and executive compensation matters.

  • Knowledge of ESOPs, M&A transactions, and welfare benefits.

  • Strong problem-solving and legal research skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and client relationships effectively.
