A law firm seeks an experienced Patent Agent to join its Seattle office. The ideal candidate will have a background in electrical engineering, computer science, or computer engineering and experience in drafting patents for the software industry. This role will involve a combination of patent prosecution, research, and litigation support under the guidance of experienced attorneys.

Duties

  • Draft patent applications and prosecute them before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Analyze technical and scientific documents, including patent publications, to assess inventions or existing patents.
  • Draft precise and legally sound patent descriptions that will serve as the foundation for patents granted worldwide.
  • Prepare materials related to patent prosecution, such as information disclosure statements and declarations.
  • Manage a U.S. and foreign patent docket, ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Conduct interviews with USPTO examiners to discuss pending patent applications.
  • Stay up to date with legal developments in intellectual property law.
  • Occasionally collaborate with attorneys on patent litigation, due diligence, and other legal matters.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or advanced degree (M.S., Ph.D.) in a technical field such as computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or another relevant engineering discipline.
  • Must be registered to practice before the USPTO.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and writing skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills and a commitment to providing top-quality client service.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to adapt to a fast-paced environment.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree or advanced degree (M.S., Ph.D.) in a relevant technical discipline (such as computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering).

Certifications

  • Admission to practice before the USPTO is required.

Skills

  • Expertise in patent prosecution, including drafting and filing applications.
  • Strong knowledge of intellectual property law and the patent process.
  • Ability to work with both technical and legal documents.
  • Familiarity with the software industry and the ability to draft software-related patents.
  • Experience with managing patent dockets and ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Skilled in interacting with patent examiners and maintaining professional relationships.
