Job Overview:

A law firm is seeking a dedicated and experienced Associate Attorney to handle a diverse caseload of special education matters. The ideal candidate will represent parents of children with disabilities in impartial hearing proceedings and appeals. This role involves managing cases through all stages of litigation, from inception to resolution, and ensuring that children with special needs receive appropriate educational support.

Location:

  • New York City, NY

Duties:

  • Independently manage a caseload of special education litigation matters.
  • Represent clients in impartial hearings against the New York City Department of Education.
  • Appeal decisions to the New York State Education Department Office of State Review.
  • Conduct client consultations and assess the merits of potential new claims.
  • Draft legal documents including due process complaints, notices, affidavits, and examination questions.
  • Negotiate with opposing counsel to explore settlement options.
  • Conduct direct and cross-examination of witnesses in hearings.
  • Draft and submit opening statements, closing briefs, and legal research documentation.
  • Prepare appeals to the Office of State Review.
  • Supervise and guide paralegals and administrative staff on pre- and post-litigation tasks.

Requirements:

  • Litigation experience, particularly handling cases from inception to resolution.
  • Strong interest in special education law and advocacy for children with special needs.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Must be licensed to practice law in New York.

Skills:

  • Strong litigation skills, including trial experience and legal research.
  • Proficient in drafting legal documents and conducting negotiations.
  • Excellent time management and ability to meet deadlines independently.
  • Proficient in managing a case management system and billing requirements.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and support staff.
