A law firm seeks a dedicated and skilled Patent Associate Attorney to join its Redwood City, CA office. Duties:

  • Assist in preparing and prosecuting patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Collaborate with senior attorneys and patent agents to manage and develop a diverse patent portfolio.
  • Analyze patentability, conduct prior art searches, and provide strategic recommendations to clients.
  • Draft and review patent applications, office action responses, and other legal documents related to patent prosecution.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, with the potential to grow your client base.
  • Work with partners and senior associates on complex legal matters and offer strategic guidance on patent law.
  • For senior associates, manage independent caseloads and mentor junior associates.
  • Participate in business development activities to increase visibility and expand the firm's patent law practice.

Requirements:

  • A science degree, preferably an advanced degree, in biological sciences (chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, cell biology, or molecular biology).
  • A law degree from an accredited institution.
  • Registration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to practice patent law.
  • Membership in good standing with a state bar (California preferred, or any state bar where the candidate resides).
  • Strong academic background and a demonstrated track record of success in legal practice.
  • Previous experience in law firm or industry settings is preferred, but not required.
  • For senior associates, prior experience managing patent portfolios and prosecuting patents is beneficial.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in a relevant scientific discipline.

Certifications:

  • USPTO Registration (required).
  • State bar membership (required).

  • Strong technical background in biological sciences or related fields.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
