Job Overview
A reputable law firm located in San Francisco, CA, is seeking an experienced Patent Agent II to assist in patent research, application preparation, and patent prosecution activities. This role requires a strong scientific background, the ability to work with minimal supervision, and the capability to support attorneys throughout various stages of patent litigation and business transactions. The successful candidate will manage patent portfolios and guide junior team members while interacting directly with clients.

Duties

  • Draft, prepare, and submit patent applications to the USPTO with limited attorney supervision.
  • Review and respond to communications from the USPTO and foreign patent offices.
  • Manage independent client interactions during the patent process.
  • Provide guidance and training to IP support professionals on procedures and patent-related requirements.
  • Support patent enforcement, licensing, and business transactions.
  • Assist with preparing patentability, validity, freedom to operate, and infringement opinions.
  • Conduct advanced research and analysis, including literature and patent searches using databases.
  • Collaborate with attorneys on complex patent litigation matters.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • 4-7 years of experience as a patent agent.
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (passed Patent Bar Exam).
  • Experience with patent prosecution, application drafting, and portfolio management.
  • Ability to independently manage client interactions and projects.
  • Knowledge of patent law and familiarity with patent litigation processes.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

Education

  • Advanced scientific degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) or a Bachelor's Degree in a technical discipline with relevant experience.

Certifications

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
