A law firm is seeking an experienced Patent Agent to join their team in Tysons Corner, VA. The ideal candidate will possess a robust technical background in biological or pharmaceutical sciences and have significant experience in patent prosecution. The role involves conducting prior art searches, analyzing patents and scientific literature, and assisting with patent preparation and prosecution. Strong communication skills and a proven track record in patent law are essential.

Duties:

  • Conduct prior art searches to evaluate patentability and freedom to operate analyses.
  • Analyze patents and scientific papers to assist with patent preparation, prosecution, and counseling.
  • Prepare and file patent applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Collaborate with attorneys to develop patent strategies and address complex legal and technical issues.
  • Provide technical support and expertise in the biological or pharmaceutical sciences.
  • Review and analyze patent claims, technical documents, and scientific research.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments in patent law and relevant scientific fields.

Requirements:

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Ph.D. or M.S. in cellular biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, virology, or a related technical field; or chemistry, organic chemistry, pharmacy, or an equivalent discipline.
  • A technical background in biological or pharmaceutical sciences is preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in patent prosecution.
  • Broad technical knowledge and experience in conducting prior art searches and patent analysis.
  • Excellent academic record.

Education:

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in a relevant technical field such as cellular biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, virology, chemistry, organic chemistry, pharmacy, or equivalent.

Certifications:

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret complex scientific and technical information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in patent preparation, prosecution, and counseling.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a legal team.
