Job Overview:

A law firm is seeking a Junior to Mid-Level Product Design and User Interface Patent Associate Attorney to join their team. The ideal candidate will have a solid combination of academic excellence, engineering and industry experience, and law firm expertise. The attorney will be responsible for patent preparation and prosecution, primarily within fields such as software-related technologies, artificial intelligence, networking, and quantum technologies. This role requires strong technical knowledge in physics, electrical engineering, or computer science, along with superb communication and writing skills.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Draft, prepare, and prosecute patent applications for clients in high-tech industries.
  • Provide counsel and legal guidance on product design and user interface patent issues.
  • Conduct prior art searches, patentability analyses, and freedom-to-operate opinions.
  • Work collaboratively with inventors, engineers, and product managers to understand the technical aspects of inventions.
  • Review and analyze patent portfolios to identify opportunities and risks.
  • Represent clients in proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Assist in patent litigation support, including providing technical expertise.
  • Stay current on legal and technological developments related to intellectual property law.
  • Provide strategic IP counsel regarding emerging technologies, including AI, IoT, and quantum computing.
  • Participate in client meetings and deliver high-quality legal work within deadlines.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is mandatory.
  • A minimum of 2+ years of patent preparation and prosecution experience.
  • Prior experience working within a law firm, as well as engineering or industry experience.
  • Experience in one or more of the following fields:
    • Software-related technologies
    • Artificial intelligence
    • Internet of Things (IoT) and networking
    • Quantum technologies
  • Proven ability to manage a patent caseload independently.

Education and Certifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in physics, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field is required.
  • A Juris Doctor (JD) degree is required.
  • Must be a registered patent attorney with the USPTO.
