A law firm seeks a Patent Agent to join their intellectual property team in Chicago. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electrical engineering or biotechnology and prior experience in patent law. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work closely with clients and contribute to the preparation and prosecution of patent applications.

Duties:

  • Collaborate directly with inventors to identify and document new inventions
  • Conduct research to assess existing patents and determine the patentability of innovations
  • Draft and prepare patent applications in partnership with the legal team
  • Manage the patent application process from submission to grant, ensuring timely progress
  • Perform regular patentability and ability searches to support clients’ needs
  • Address and resolve client challenges promptly, maintaining strong relationships
  • Communicate with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to respond to office actions
  • Consistently meet or exceed billable hour targets

Requirements:

  • Background in electrical engineering, biotechnology, or related scientific discipline
  • Previous experience in patent law, preferably in a law firm or corporate setting
  • Familiarity with patent prosecution procedures and related regulatory frameworks
  • Strong research and analytical skills to assess and draft patent filings
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant science or engineering field is required
  • A Master's degree or PhD is a plus

Certifications:

  • Must hold or be eligible to obtain USPTO Registration

Skills:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Detail-oriented with a keen focus on accuracy in legal documentation
