A law firm in Washington, DC, seeks a skilled Junior-/Mid-Level Patent Attorney to join their team. The ideal candidate will have solid intellectual property (IP), a patent law foundation, and scientific expertise in a relevant field. This role involves conducting patent searches, preparing and filing patent applications, and contributing to managing IP portfolios.

Duties:

  • Conduct thorough patent searches and analyze patentability and prior art.
  • Review and stay informed about technological advancements relevant to clients' fields.
  • Prepare and file patent applications with the USPTO and internationally.
  • Contribute to developing and managing IP and patent portfolios for clients.
  • Advise clients on patent strategy, including patentability, infringement, and freedom-to-operate analyses.
  • Collaborate with clients and other legal professionals to ensure robust patent protection.
  • Draft and prosecute patent applications, respond to office actions, and manage client correspondence.
  • Participate in patent-related litigation and opposition proceedings as needed.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
  • Actively licensed as an attorney in a U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Eligibility to waive into the D.C. Bar or willingness to sit for the D.C. Bar exam.
  • 3-5 years of experience practicing patent prosecution at another law firm.
  • A strong foundation in IP and patent law.
  • USPTO registration number preferred.
  • Previous wet lab experience preferred.
  • Stellar academic credentials with a JD or higher degree.
  • Master’s or PhD preferred in a relevant scientific discipline, such as biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry, organic chemistry, molecular genetics, human genetics, chemical engineering, or immunology.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in patent search and analysis tools and methods.
  • Strong understanding of both U.S. and international patent laws and procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex legal and scientific concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple patent projects and deadlines efficiently.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clients and colleagues.
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy in documentation and filing.
