A law firm seeks an experienced Associate to join its Patent Prosecution & Litigation team in Houston, Texas, focusing on mechanical engineering technologies. The ideal candidate will have a background in mechanical engineering and substantial experience in intellectual property law, particularly in patent prosecution. This role provides an exciting opportunity to work on innovative and high-profile cases involving mechanical and electro-mechanical systems. The firm seeks a skilled attorney who can provide comprehensive legal support in both patent prosecution and litigation matters.

Duties:

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications, including drafting and filing documents with the USPTO and foreign patent offices.
  • Conduct patent searches, analyze prior art, and assess the patentability of inventions.
  • Work closely with clients to understand their technologies and provide strategic IP counsel.
  • Assist in patent litigation matters, providing technical expertise and legal support during trials and disputes.
  • Collaborate with senior attorneys and clients to develop comprehensive intellectual property strategies.
  • Stay up to date with developments in mechanical engineering technologies and related legal standards.
  • Manage case files, prioritize assignments, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Review and draft legal documents, including patent applications, office action responses, and legal opinions.
  • Support the IP transactional team with contract drafting, licensing agreements, and other related matters.

Requirements:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering (advanced degrees or prior work experience in engineering before law school are highly preferred).
  • At least 4 years of experience in intellectual property law, particularly in patent prosecution.
  • Strong knowledge of machinery, mechanical systems, and electro-mechanical technologies.
  • Experience in IP transactions, such as licensing and patent portfolio management, is a plus.
  • Registered to practice before the USPTO.
  • Licensed to practice law in Texas, or the ability to become licensed in Texas promptly.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent academic background and a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects effectively.

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field is required.

Certifications:

  • Registration with the USPTO is required.

Skills:

  • Expertise in mechanical engineering and intellectual property law.
  • Ability to draft patent applications and provide technical analysis in the context of patent law.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in managing patent portfolios and providing IP strategy advice.
