A law firm in Chicago, IL is seeking a Patent Agent with 1-2 years of experience in patent prosecution. The ideal candidate will work with clients on innovative technologies to procure patent protection and build IP portfolios. Responsibilities include drafting and filing patent applications, supporting due diligence and patent litigation, and maintaining internal practices for patent management. Strong attention to detail, advanced writing skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks are essential.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with clients to procure patent protection for cutting-edge technologies and build IP portfolios.
  • Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications on behalf of clients.
  • Provide support for due diligence, landscape analysis, freedom-to-operate analysis, and validity assessments in collaboration with industry partners.
  • Draft responses to patent application rejections from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and other international patent offices.
  • Focus on patent filings and support patent litigation as needed.
  • Interact professionally with internal and external clients at all levels.
  • Collaborate effectively as part of a global professional team.
  • Manage and oversee patent-related projects, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Establish and maintain practices, procedures, and technology for coordinating patent-related information, filings, and deadlines.
  • Demonstrate advanced writing skills and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly to internal and external clients.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with lawyers, firm management, staff, and clients both verbally and in writing.
  • Exhibit strong project management, organizational, and planning skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Work well under pressure, with flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and assignments.
  • Adapt to flexible work schedules, including evenings or weekends, as needed for projects.

Requirements:

  • 1-2 years of experience in patent prosecution.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or a related field.
  • Industry experience (or equivalent) in Software Development/Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and/or Semiconductor Manufacturing & Packaging is strongly preferred.
  • Registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or a related field.

Certifications:

  • Registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Skills:

  • Proven ability to draft and prosecute patent applications.
