A law firm seeks an experienced Senior Associate or Special Counsel for its Cyber/Data Privacy (C/D/P) practice group in Chicago. The role will focus on litigation and regulatory enforcement investigations related to privacy and data security issues. This position is ideal for a candidate with at least seven years of experience in handling privacy-related litigation or regulatory investigations, including consumer protection, data breach class actions, and state or federal enforcement matters. The candidate will lead projects, work closely with clients, and contribute to the growth of the practice. This position is located in Chicago, but candidates from other offices may be considered.

Duties

  • Litigation & Regulatory Enforcement

    • Lead and manage litigation related to privacy and data security, including class actions, regulatory investigations, and consumer protection matters.
    • Represent clients in cases involving the Stored Communications Act, wiretapping claims, data breach incidents, and allegations of unfair trade practices.
    • Engage directly with government agencies such as the FTC, State Attorneys General, and other regulatory bodies to resolve privacy and data security matters.
  • Client Engagement

    • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, providing strategic advice and managing expectations on privacy and data security issues.
    • Coordinate and oversee significant projects, ensuring timely and high-quality deliverables.
  • Tech Fluency & Legal Strategy

    • Apply knowledge of technology and privacy laws to shape legal strategies for clients in a fast-evolving field.
    • Stay current with regulatory changes, industry trends, and best practices to provide proactive counsel.
  • Team Collaboration & Leadership

    • Mentor junior associates and contribute to the growth and development of the practice group.
    • Collaborate with colleagues in various offices and other legal areas to provide comprehensive solutions for clients.
  • Writing & Analysis

    • Draft high-quality legal documents, including pleadings, motions, and regulatory submissions.
    • Conduct thorough legal research and analysis to support litigation and compliance strategies.

Requirements

  • Experience

    • At least 7 years of experience in litigation and regulatory investigations related to data privacy, cybersecurity, or consumer protection.
    • Experience with data privacy and security class actions, including claims under the Stored Communications Act, wiretapping, and unfair trade practices.
    • A proven track record of working with state and federal regulatory agencies, including the FTC and State Attorneys General.
  • Skills

    • Strong analytical, writing, and research skills, with the ability to craft compelling legal arguments.
    • Ability to manage complex cases, handle client relationships, and lead projects effectively.
    • A high level of tech fluency and a deep understanding of data privacy laws and their application in litigation.
    • Detail-oriented with the ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from a nationally recognized law school.

Certifications

  • Licensed to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction.

  • Expertise in privacy law, data security regulations, and consumer protection.
  • Proficiency in managing regulatory investigations and complex litigation.
  • Experience with data breach class actions and privacy-related compliance issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including legal writing and client communications.
