The candidate will be responsible for advising clients on patent law, managing patent portfolios, and providing strategic counsel on intellectual property matters. Duties:

  • Prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and internationally.
  • Draft comprehensive patent applications, including claims, specifications, and associated documents.
  • Offer strategic advice to clients on matters related to patentability, infringement, and validity.
  • Assist in managing and optimizing patent portfolios, conducting intellectual property (IP) audits, and supporting due diligence efforts.
  • Conduct detailed legal research and analysis on patent law, including case law, statutes, and regulations.
  • Collaborate closely with inventors, in-house counsel, and other stakeholders to develop effective intellectual property strategies.
  • Support patent litigation processes, including preparing legal arguments, managing discovery, and assisting with trial preparation.
  • Engage in business development activities such as networking, presenting at industry events, and contributing to client outreach efforts.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • 3-7 years of experience in patent prosecution, ideally in a law firm or corporate setting.
  • Admission to the Illinois State Bar or eligibility to obtain it.

Education:

  • A Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree is required from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Registration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • State Bar admission in Illinois (or the ability to obtain it).

Skills:

  • Strong technical background in areas such as electrical engineering, computer science, biotechnology, chemistry, or mechanical engineering.
