Job Overview

A law firm is seeking a highly skilled Patent Agent to join its team. The ideal candidate will have an engineering or computer science degree, at least two years of experience in patent drafting and prosecution, and the ability to work collaboratively with attorneys and clients in various industries, including medical devices and electronics. 

Location

  • Charlotte, NC

Duties

  • Collaborate with attorneys and clients across various industries, including medical devices and electronics.
  • Draft and prosecute patent applications for U.S. and international patents.
  • Build and manage patent portfolios, working with attorneys to meet diverse client needs.
  • Conduct due diligence investigations, including freedom-to-operate and landscape analyses.
  • Provide technical expertise and patent law insight to clients and the firm’s legal teams.
  • Analyze complex technologies in mechanical, electrical, biomedical, or related fields.

Requirements

  • At least two years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution.
  • Undergraduate degree in engineering or computer science (mechanical, electrical, biomedical, or related fields preferred).
  • Strong academic credentials with excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Preferred: Registered to practice before the USPTO.
  • Preferred: Experience in patent prosecution in the mechanical, electrical, or biomedical fields.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.

Education

  • Undergraduate degree in engineering or computer science (e.g., mechanical, electrical, biomedical, or related fields).

Certifications

  • Registration to practice before the USPTO (preferred).

Skills

  • Strong patent drafting and prosecution skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to conduct thorough due diligence investigations and analyses.
  • Knowledge of patent laws and procedures in the U.S. and internationally.
  • Technical expertise in mechanical, electrical, biomedical, or related engineering fields.
