Job Overview

A well-established law firm is seeking a Patent Agent to join its Patent Prosecution & Litigation Practice Group, specializing in Chemical, Pharmaceutical, and Biotech industries. This role is open to candidates across multiple office locations, with a preference for offices in the Southeast region. The Patent Agent will be responsible for patent prosecution and litigation support related to cutting-edge innovations in the chemical, pharma, and biotech sectors.

Location

  • Washington, DC

Duties

  • Drafting and prosecuting patent applications related to chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech technologies
  • Providing patent litigation support, including research and analysis of infringement issues
  • Assisting with client consultations on IP strategy and portfolio management
  • Preparing responses to office actions, appeals, and other prosecution-related filings
  • Conducting prior art searches and preparing technical memoranda
  • Collaborating with attorneys, clients, and technical experts to develop and protect intellectual property

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in patent prosecution and/or litigation
  • Strong background in patent prosecution, including drafting patent applications
  • Chemical Engineering or Chemistry degree (advanced degrees and/or prior work experience preferred)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional organizational and analytical abilities

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field
  • Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) preferred, but not required

Certifications

  • Registered Patent Agent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

Skills

  • In-depth understanding of patent law and prosecution processes
  • Strong technical writing skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of patent databases and tools for prior art searches
  • Excellent communication and client interaction skills
